Northwest Unitarian Universalist CongregationWhat newcomers notice when they first visit our facility nestled in the woods of North Atlanta is the warmth and friendliness of our members. We reach out to each newcomer and to each other. Our congregation places major emphasis on meeting the spiritual needs of our adult members as well as those of our children.
Our Religious Education program teaches children and youth about values. Curricula are designed so students at every grade level will see themselves as part of this religious community by developing peer and intergenerational relationships, celebrate UU principles and beliefs in both their words and actions, and be able to answer in an age-appropriate and meaningful way when asked “What is UUism?”
Our Adult Education programs are varied, encompassing science and religion, spirituality, book discussion groups, and other topical subjects such as self-improvement classes. There are retreat opportunities where participants can renew and connect.
Social Justice is key to our values and purpose. We support the Community Action Center, Project Open Hand, My House, Open Door Community, Common Ground, Partner Church Program, UU Service Committee and the Seventh Principle Project. We show our support in the community by being present at a wide variety of other causes related to Social Justice.
Sunday Services build on the sense of community. The group strengthens the individual just as the individual bolsters the group. Each service includes music and the lighting of the chalice, a reminder of our hopes and commitment to a better world. Members may share Joys and Concerns, gaining strength and support from other members of the congregation. Sermons and presentations are diverse, often exploring social justice and relationship issues as well as other cultures and ideologies. We study and celebrate a variety of religious holidays and practices from around the world.
Community is evident in the number of gathering opportunities available. We really enjoy one another's company. The congregation has groups that meet on a monthly or bi-monthly basis, ranging from potluck dinners at someone's home to attending an outdoor concert at Piedmont Park. We also have active men's and women's groups which meet monthly for dinner camaraderie as well as for a program, and a choir that meets weekly.
The Hungry Ear Coffeehouse is held on the first Saturday evening of each month. It offers local musicians an opportunity to showcase their talents in a cozy, welcoming environment, and offers listeners a fabulous evening of entertainment and musical adventure.
Our membership is about 200 and growing. The Northwest Unitarian Universalist Congregation is indeed a very special place. Please visit us. Sunday Services start at 10:30am.
